How QuickBooks has helped me grow my accounting practice

I now put most of my new clients onto QuickBooks because I think it’s so easy to use and intuitive, and find that clients do too. I believe that offering QuickBooks and support together has helped me to grow my business.
I think QuickBooks is a fantastic package and I’d like the message to get out about it even more.

These are my tips for other accounting professionals on using QuickBooks to grow your practice:

  • We bundle QuickBooks support in with the software so that we can get clients set up and running with QuickBooks quickly. We make it so that they can easily find the financial information they need.
  • Tailor the training according to clients’ needs. For example, we offer one and two-day training. Sometimes I set up the accounts for them so that when they arrive for the training, it’s even more straightforward. It’s very customer-led.
  • Look for training grants. Grants are out there for training and they’re worth taking advantage of. This can help you offer training to more clients, particularly in the current economic climate. I offer other training besides QuickBooks too, such as Excel, Word and more. Telling clients that they will get cashback on their training and that we can provide the QuickBooks training for them has been a huge success.
  • Make the case for your training. Skills for Scotland agreed that they would offer support for our training.  We explained that accounting software was essential for small businesses, especially with the business records checks in mind.
  • Sell the simplicity. Businesses, especially sole traders and small family firms, like the way we work. They don’t want to know the ins and outs of accounting. If you take all that headache away from them and set up their reporting for them, it’s an attractive offer. I set things up and then I train them in what they really need to know – e.g. sending an invoice, inputting purchases and doing a bank reconciliation. QuickBooks is so easy to use for anyone who isn’t a book-keeper or an accountant.
  • Show businesses what it means for them. I find the month-to-month reports very useful. Small businesses often have a gut feeling about how they’re doing. I can show them exactly how they’re doing using QuickBooks and how to analyse the information.  They want to know how to check for cashflow problems and see their business’s health at a glance and with QuickBooks they can do that
  • Highlight the cost savings. I explain that once they can do the basic transactions covered in the training, they will save money on their accounting fees. I don’t mind telling them that once they can use the software, their VAT return will take me less time and save them money.
